Born before the Great Depression, Truett Cathy began his entrepreneurial career at eight years old, selling bottled Coca-Colas in front of his home. From there, he became a highly successful restauranteur and launched one of the most successful chicken restaurant chains in the United States. Chick-fil-A, established in the 1960's, has over 2,700 restaurants across the country and is now the #1 chicken restaurant chain in America. The company is renowned for its great tasting food, service, hospitality, and business model.
Chick-fil-A, the fast-food chain best known for its chicken sandwiches and Sunday closings, reached $5.8 billion in revenue in 2021. This was up 33.3% from the previous year. With its 2,074 locations, Chick-fil-A may seem like it could be a lucrative investment opportunity.
Chick-fil-A is a privately owned and family-operated quick-service restaurant specializing in boneless chicken-based dishes. The Chick-fil-A franchise has gained a cult-like following that has propelled the brand from the American South, its base, to a nationwide chain of approximately 2,500 locations and estimated annual systemwide sales over $10 billion. With its emphasis on family, and its early reputation for outspoken Christian values, Chick-fil-A has invited some controversy while still attracting broad American appeal. More about the cost of owning a Chick-fil-A franchise below.

Founded by Truett Cathy in Hapeville, Georgia in 1946, Chick-fil-A has expanded to become the largest chicken fast food franchise in the U.S. with over 1900 locations in 42 states. Based in Atlanta, GA, the franchise is still family owned and privately held. Each year thousands of entrepreneurs apply for a Chick-fil-A franchise but only a handful will actually receive the opportunity.
Chick-fil-A is one of the biggest American fast-food restaurants specializing in fried chicken sandwiches. The franchise is primarily located in the United States with over 2,500 locations in over 28 states. Chick-fil-A also operates in Puerto Rico and Canada. The popular fast-food chain was founded in 1946 as the Dwarf Grill and then renamed as Dwarf House until their rebranding into Chick-fil-A in 1967.
Chick-fil-A also has a great emphasis on its Christian beliefs and family-oriented values. This has them closing all their franchises on Sundays. While many can see this as a loss of revenue, this piggybacks to the earlier conversation about supply and demand, so consumers will want to satisfy their craving. Revenue will be met with higher demand on other days, so there is no need to worry. Sunday will also give time for store owners to get much-needed relaxation, spend time with their family, watch Sunday night NFL, etc. This represents Chick-fil-A giving time and consideration to their employees.
Chick Fil A is well-known for its delicious chicken sandwich, chicken nuggets, and grilled chicken. Their fried chicken and spicy chicken have shown up their competitors like Wendy's, reigning supreme over fast food establishments. One menu item you might not realize CFA sells is their 5lb bag of ice. Chick-Fil-A ice costs only $1.59 per bag, making it a pretty good deal. While we thought Chick-Fil-A was the only one to sell ice, we quickly realized that other fast food restaurants like McDonald's, Sonic, and Burger King also allow customers to purchase a bag of ice.
Many customers agree that the Chick-Fil-A ice is superior in texture to regular ice. CFA ice is also known as pebble ice or nugget ice which is a softer and chewier type of ice that soaks up the sweet flavor from the drinks. It's also easier on the teeth for the ice chewers out there. People love Chick-Fil-A ice so much, that there's even a special ice maker out there designed to get that desired ice texture.

Even with the success of the chicken sandwich, Popeyes still doesn't have Chick-fil-A beat when it comes to America's most favorite fast food chain. Not even McDonald's can seem to touch Chick-fil-A in the brand satisfaction and customer loyalty category, according to QSR Magazine. When one considers just how popular the chicken chain is with American consumers, operating one of their franchises seems like it would be a pretty lucrative business endeavor.
Most fast food companies don't make it widely known just how much their franchise owners earn a year, but that doesn't mean it's not possible to get a pretty good idea. According to the franchise information group, Franchise City, a Chick-fil-A operator today can expect to earn an average of around $200,000 a year. This calculation is based on the average restaurant's earnings and the percent gross that operators take (via Washington Post). The chicken business pays pretty well, but the tough part is actually getting the business.
Given how popular Chick-fil-A's chicken has become, it's no surprise that their franchisees are making bank. Getting to the point where Chick-fil-A hands over the keys to one of their restaurants is no easy task, though.
Compared to other franchises, such as McDonald's, which asks for a $45,000 startup fee and liquid assets of $500,000, Chick-fil-A's $10,000 fee is a real bargain (via The Chicken Wire). In fact, it's actually the cheapest fast food franchise a person can buy and only costs around 10 grand up front. That's a real steal compared to the $30,00 average fast food franchise startup fee (via The Hustle). For the curious, the next cheapest is Subway and Church's chicken at around $15,000 each.
One of the many things that sets the chicken franchise a part from other fast food establishments (*side eyes McDonald's*) is the fact that they've never been stingy with their sauces. There is no extra fee for extras at Chick-fil-A they will usually just throw at least six in the bag, give or take. But those days have come to an end, at least for now.
The company announced on May 4 that customers will be limited to one sauce packet per entree, two sauce packets per meal and three sauce packets per 30-count chicken nuggets. Seriously How is it even possible to eat 30 nuggets with just three sauces

The Chick-fil-A franchise is the third largest fast-food franchise, and the largest franchise offering chicken in America. The company operates 2,000 franchises across 46 states. If you want to enter the quick-service restaurant industry and operate your own Chick-fil-A franchise, you can expect to pay an initial investment of $10,000. With its emphasis on family, and its early reputation for outspoken Christian values, the company has invited some controversy while still being able to attract broad American appeal. For example, there have been boycotts of the company due to the owner's views on traditional marriage. The restaurant serves breakfast before transitioning to its lunch and dinner menu and also offers customers catered selections from its menu for special events.

I make this recipe regularly because my 12 year son loves chicken and this sauce! I have always used agave with this recipe. I just half the amount since agave is more sweet than honey. It always turns out great
I got sent home from college due to the coronavirus and was seriously missing chick-fil-a runs with my friends after classes so i tried to remake the sauce, and this recipe is so on point! thank you!
Thank you for this copycat recipe. It is so needed when one makes the copycat chicken sandwich. Five simple ingredients, go figure! I did use fresh lemon juice, not bottled. I used a smoked bold bbq sauce as that is what I had on hand.
Our bottle of Chic Fil A sauce is almost empty. It is not easy to find in our grocery stores, so I googled recipes and found this. It is excellent! I tried to make a smaller amount & think I goofed on proportions. But we do not feel the need to buy the CFA brand ever again. Thank you so much!
This is probably fairly accurate to the original. I was an employee of the inventor of the recipe, Hugh Fleming. He discovered it in the mid 1980's in Spotsylvania VA. It was kind of discovered accidentally when sauces were inadvertently mixed together on a plate and someone dipped their nuggets in it. I am sure it was doctored after this, but as far as I know, it was sauces that we had on hand. Couldn't keep the fresh stuff in stock. It was flying out the frid
